Children's Yoga

Yoga is just great for children and is becoming more and more popular in schools. The real value is in the way it joins together the body and mind, simultaneously developing mental and physical wellbeing.

Physically it benefits children in many ways. Encouraging strength, balance, co-ordination and flexibility. It develop proprioception (knowing where your body is in space) and interoception (the ability to feel what is happening inside your body). It provides children with opportunities to physically challenge themselves but in a thoughtful way with an appreciation of their own body. Everyone is unique and everyone can do yoga. It has many crossovers with gymnastics in the PE curriculum and can be used to meet curriculum requirements.

Kids yoga sessions are fun and creative and include lots of visualisations, games, challenges and partner work. Sessions can inspire creativity, confidence, and growth mindset as well as an appreciation for others and co-operation skills.

Yoga breathing and relaxation techniques, give children time to slow down. It quietens their minds, which leads to improved concentration and helps them to learn how to relax and manage stress. Yoga also gives children a way to connect with their feelings and emotions, and provides a nurturing and non-competitive environment in which they can express themselves through movement.

A typical session would include warming up, learning and experimenting with different Yoga postures (as well as creating our own), games and challenges, breathing and mindfulness activities and savasana (relaxation).

Younger children will often enjoy classes based around a story or poem, with older children it may be based more round a theme. Sessions can be done with a full class or smaller group.
